- Comment: Although I agree high school bands are generally not notable, that doesn't mean they never are. But this particular draft shows a common misconception about Wikipedia. The main ideas behind Wikipedia are outlined in the five pillars. One of those pillars is WP:NOT, which outlines what Wikipedia isn't. Wikipedia is not a web host, nor is it social media. When one writes an encyclopedia article, one is actually reporting on what others have written about the subject in reliable, independent sources. History
[edit]The band was formed around the same time the school was created, in 1962, due to overcrowding at Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest.[2] Over the years, the band has many band directors. The current director, Amy Wilcox[3], has been in the position for over 10 years.
Traditions
[edit]Performing at Football Games
[edit]The marching band performs at football games, playing stand tunes and their halftime show.
Competitions
[edit]In addition to games, the halftime show is also performed at competitions, including the USBands Nationals Competition, held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.[4]
Home competition
[edit]The band also has a home competition that is hosted at the school. The funds are used to fundraise events and meals.
McDonalds After Games
[edit]After football games, the members often go to a local McDonald's. Seniors oftentimes drive underclassmen.
Band Camp Theme Days
[edit]To prepare for the season, the band has a band camp during the last 2 to 3 weeks of summer break. [5]During the camp, the leaders and drum majors come up with themes for the different sections to compete in.
Band Camp Games
[edit]Along with theme days, the leaders also engage the band in fun games, usually played before dinners.
Pool Parties
[edit]The band often goes to a member's house for pool parties at the end of band camp. Parties are also hosted at the end of the season.
Awards Dinner
[edit]At the end of the season, the band staff hosts an awards dinner for members and their families.[6] Participation is recognized, as are the leadership, drum majors, and seniors.
Class and Rank
[edit]The band is currently ranked in IV Open Class, the second-largest rank (IV) in the second-highest class (Open). They've maintained this ranking since earning it after their 2023 season. In the past, they've held the ranks of II A Class (until after 2022 season ; second-smallest rank in third-largest class) and III Open Class (for one year during the 2023 season ; third-largest rank in second-largest class).[7][8][9]

Accolades
[edit]The band has won many competitions over the years, winning the title of US Bands Group II A State Champion for their 2021 show, "Scheherazade",[7] US Bands Group II A National Champion for their 2022 show, "Kusama"[8] and then US Bands Group III Open Class State Champion for their 2023 show, "Cathedral".[9]

- Joseph Bergen - Percussion Director (Staff at Caldwell University)[11]
- Teddie Sotiropolous - Visual Captain Head (Staff at Montclair State University)[12]
The school also gets student teachers from Montclair State University. The director of bands at Watchung Hills Regional High School, Allan Daleus[13], also assists the band at times. He is a past staff member. Clifford Bialkin, the director of bands at Ramsey High School[14] has commissioned, composed, and arranged shows for the band. Rick Morey creates the drill, or movements on the field, to correspond with the music. Morey is a constant collaborator of local marching bands.[15] The band has 5 percussion instructors: Jim Bogert, Sonia Casiano, Nick Rosolanko, Diane Suris, and Michael Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is also the Jazz Band director at the high school[16] and an independent music artist.[17] He also worked at Norwood Public School District.[18] There are two color guard instructors: Jill McDermott and Jackie Yurkin.
Drum Majors
[edit]The band has three drum majors, a mix of juniors and seniors. They wear separate uniforms from the rest of the band and conduct the band in the stands. The senior drum major is the head of the two other drum majors, and conducts the band during their halftime show. The position of drum major is determined through an audition.

- Mellophones, used in place of French horns.
- Baritones, used in place of Trombones because of the danger of the slide
- Sousaphones used in place of Tubas.

Percussion Performers
[edit]Drumline
[edit]The drumline consists of students playing Bass drums, Snare drums, and Tenor drums while performing the halftime show, with cymbals and other small percussion instruments.
Pit / Front Ensemble
[edit]The pit, also known as the front ensemble, are percussionists who perform on the field during the halftime show. They play larger percussion instruments such as marimbas, synthesizers, and a drum kit. They also use soundboards to emulate vocals and sound effects during performances. They also play along side the drumline in the stands.
Color Guard Performers
[edit]The color guard are a set of dancers who perform choreography in the stands and the field. They often carry flags and mock pistols and swords.
GKPAC
[edit]The Golden Knights Performing Arts Coalition, or GKPAC, are a group of marching band parents who fund the band's events and meals.[19]
