From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mzansi is an informal name for South Africa.[1]

Plot[edit]

When it comes to origin, the source of the word ''Mzansi'' is pretty straight forward. it is derived from the word ''Mzantsi'', which means ''South'' in Xhosa. South Africans have been using the word as an informal moniker since the late 90s, more or less, it is safe to say that the word is now firmly entrenched in the national brands and lexicon.

The official Xhosa name for South Africa is ''uMzantsi Afrika'', When compared to the official Zulu name ''iNingizimu Afrika'' in the early 2000s big corporate brands adopted the word, which very likely contributed to its popularity. The word is actually Isixhosa.[2]

Reception[edit]

  • 'smart, allusive, informal, playful, audacious' - The Independent.[3]
  • 'a seductive and compelling case for the power of imagination' - The Guardian.[4]
