My Home Unknown' is a 2024 American independent drama film written, directed, and starring Yaz Canli. The film explores the themes of homelessness and mental illness, following the story of a young woman living on the streets of Los Angeles. The film premiered at the TLC Chinese Theater in Hollywood as part of the Dances With Films festival and has been noted for its authentic and raw portrayal of marginalized communities.
Plot
[edit]The film follows Mina, a young and talented artist who loses her home and becomes homeless following a series of personal tragedies. Struggling with her mental health, Mina navigates the challenges of life on the streets, forming connections with other individuals in similar situations, including a local dealer who becomes involved in her life. As the story unfolds, Mina’s past is gradually revealed, offering insight into how she ended up in her current circumstances and her efforts to find hope and stability.
Production
[edit]The film is produced by WallyBird Productions founder Diane Foster, and is executive produced by Threshold Entertainment’s Lawrence Kasanoff (“Mortal Kombat” franchise) and Oscar winner Jimmy Ienner, with music by Michael Lloyd (“Dirty Dancing”) and Emmy winner Greg O’Connor. My Home Unknown was filmed entirely on location in Los Angeles, California, during the pandemic. Director Yaz Canli aimed for authenticity, choosing real urban settings like Skid Row to depict the harsh realities of homelessness. Despite the film’s micro budget, it has been praised for its production value and vivid cinematography.
In October 2024 Variety announced that Gravitas Ventures has acquired all North American rights to the drama.
