Moree Public School was founded in 1884 to meet the educational needs of the growing population in Moree. The school was part of the broader movement during the late 19th century when the New South Wales government expanded the public education system following the introduction of the Public Instruction Act of 1880.

It was originally located on the site of the present Moree East Public School, with Moree East Public School itself opening in 1958 as a separate institution to address the educational needs of the expanding town.
