The Grenadiers and Riflemen Monument (Monument Grenadiers en Jagers) is a memorial dedicated to soldiers of the Regiment Garde Grenadiers and Jagers who have died since 1940. The statue was created by artist Dirk Bus and was unveiled in 1951.
Unveiling
[edit]The monument was unveiled on October 6, 1951, by General H.G. Winkelman at Hofweg in The Hague, where it remained until November 1964. From 1964 to 2010, the monument was located on Johan de Wittlaan in The Hague. In April 2010, it was relocated to Böttgerwater in Ypenburg. It was unveiled there on May 10 by Mayor Jozias van Aartsen and the commander of the Regiment Garde Grenadiers and Jagers, Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Timmermans. The Governor of the Residence, Lieutenant General Mr. Dick van Putten, and the Inspector General of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Lex Oostendorp, were also present at the ceremony.
Background
[edit]During the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, fierce fighting took place around Ypenburg Airport. Dutch soldiers recaptured the airfield from the German airborne troops. In and around The Hague, 515 Dutch soldiers lost their lives, including 208 from the Regiment Garde Grenadiers and Jagers.
The inscription on the monument reads:
IN MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES-IN-ARMS
WHO IN THE DAYS OF MAY 1940 AND THEREAFTER
HERE AND OVERSEAS
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE FATHERLAND
Since 2010, an annual commemoration is held at this monument on May 10. Students from De Startbaan Elementary School have adopted the monument; children from the 7th grade take care of the monument and attend the commemoration.
