Mohamed Ghoujdami (1935-May 2003) was a Moroccan military officer. He is best known for his role in the Battle of Guelta Zemmur.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Mohamed was born in 1935 in Northern Morocco and is of Amazigh origin.[2] [3] He originally started at an engineering school before later attending military school in Kenitra.[4] After being promoted to Lieutenant colonel at the end of 1979, he was appointed commander of the 6th RIM (6th Motorized Infantry Regiment) by senior general Ahmed Dlimi. During the Western Sahara War, he took part in many actions against the POLISARIO rebels including defending the town of Smara and recapturing the town of Guelta Zemmur during the battle that took place there[5]. After his actions in these battles, he was promoted to colonel.[6]

Legacy

[edit]

Mohamed Ghoujdami was described as a very intelligent and extravagant man by an American journalist who had met him. Mohamed is also widely regarded as brave and a hero by the general public for his successes against the Western Saharan rebels. [7]However, the former commander in the Royal Moroccan Army, Mahjoub Tobji accused him and his regiment of arriving after the fighting had already took place and taking credit.
