Milo Martinović in later life

Milo Stankov Martinović was born in Bajice, Montenegro on October 21 1871.

In 1890, at the age of nineteen, he attended a school for non-commissioned officers in Podgorica, graduating with the rank of sergeant. He later attended an artillery officer school in Cetinje from 1896 to 1900, graduating with the rank of second lieutenant.

In 1912 he received an artillery command and served with the Royal Montenegrin Army until its dissolution, serving in the First and Second Balkan Wars and the First World War immediately afterwards. In 1916 he was captured by Austro-Hungarian forces and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Boldogasszony, where he remained until 1918.[2]

After the end of the World War I, he and his son Svetozar accompanied King Nicholas I in exile to the Kingdom of Italy before returning to Montenegro in 1921.[2]
