Miloš Maričić (Serbian Cyrillic: Милош Маричић; born 1982[1]) is a Serbian-Swiss writer and philanthropist known for being an early proponent of trust-based philanthropy and the use of artificial intelligence in the sector.[2]

Life and career

[edit]

Maričić was born in Serbia, and grew up during the Yugoslav wars.[1] He was educated at the London School of Economics, New York University, and Harvard Business School.[2] He spent the early part of his career in the humanitarian sector, including with the International Committee of the Red Cross.[1]

Maričić is the founder of Altruist League, a Geneva-based network of philanthropists seeking to fund systemic change through supporting grassroots movements and rapid experimentation with new technology.[1][2]

His first book, Fixing Philanthropy (2021), expanded on the concept of New Power developed by Jeremy Heimans, proposed a new theory for understanding the intrinsic motivation of donors, and provided a criticism of movements such as effective altruism and impact investing.[2][3][4]

In 2024, Maričić edited the Routledge Handbook of AI & Philanthropy, showcasing early examples of successful use of artificial intelligence in philanthropy and arguing for a greater role for the sector in influencing global AI regulation.[5][6]

Maričić has represented the institutional investor industry in the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act standardization process as Chair of Executive AI, a network of large European investment organizations.[7] He has also served as a member of the OECD’s Digital Trust Convention.[8][9]

Maričić is a guest lecturer at the University of Geneva.[2]

Sports and art

[edit]

Maričić is a veteran BASE jumper and has published guidelines on safety and risk management aimed at jumpers new to the sport.[10] As an endurance motorcyclist, he has been inducted into Iron Butt Association’s Hall of Fame.[11]

During the Great Recession, Maričić founded a project in New York City, offering strangers a chance to speak to him and his team for 15 minutes, promising to “forget” the information.[12] The initiative, inspired by the Bureau of Surrealist Research by Antonin Artaud and the Surrealist movement, was the subject of a TEDx talk.[13]
