Mikke van Hool (born 4 November 1967) is a Belgian former racing driver. He last competed in the 2008 Belgian GT Championship.[1] Van Hool founded and owned former F3000 team Astromega.[2]

Career

[edit]

Single-seaters

[edit]

After a 1989 campaign in Dutch Formula Ford 1600, Van Hool's first big jump came upon joining the 1990 French Formula Three Championship with KTR. However, he struggled in this season, only scoring one point enroute to 23rd in the standings.[3]

In 1991, the Belgian driver made the move to British Formula Three, first with Edenbridge Racing, which saw similar results to his French season the year prior.[4] He made the move to P-1 Racing in 1992, and he managed to score his first five single-seaters podiums and finished fifth overall.[5] Van Hool finished the year in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix with P-1 but ended with a DNF.[6]

Van Hool advanced up to F3000-level machinery to the British Formula Two Championship in 1993. He impressed with Madgwick International, scoring three wins and two further podiums, but he ultimately missed out on the title to fellow countryman Philippe Adams by three points.[7] He also took part in two races in British Formula Three at the beginning of their season with P-1 and achieved a fourth-placed result in round three.[8]

Following his British Formula Two successes, Madgwick promoted Van Hool up to the International Formula 3000 Championship in 1994. However, he failed to recapture the success of the year prior, going points-less.[9] He returned to the championship in 1995, this time with the self-owned Team Astromega, but again failed to score points. He would not return to single-seaters after 1995.[10]

After a decade-long hiatus, Van Hool returned briefly to racing in the Belgian GT Championship. He scored two podiums in five races during the season.[11] He did not return to the championship in 2009 and hasn't returned to racing since.

As a team owner

[edit]

In 1995, Van Hool founded Team Astromega for that year's International F3000 season. The team participated in series such as A1GP, Formula Renault 1.6 and Euro Formula 3000.
