Midnight City are an electronic music duo from Liverpool, England, consisting of Jonny Hayes and Josh Jones.[1] Formed in 2013, the duo's work is primarily within house music and its subgenres.[2]
Musical career
[edit]In 2015, Midnight City released "Natural High" with American singer Kim English, on New York label Nervous Records. The track heavily samples vocals from her 1998 single 'Jumpin' and Bumpin'.[3]
Later that same year, they co-produced the Philip George and Anton Powers single "Alone No More".[4][5] Released by 3 Beat Records, the track debuted at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart, number 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart,[6] and number 1 on the Scottish Singles Chart.[7] In 2020, the single was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry.[8]
Their debut single, "Just Like That," featuring vocals from London-based singer Raphaella, was released in February 2016 through Get Twisted Records and Columbia Records. The single reached number 1 on the Music Week Upfront Club Top 40 chart[1][9] and received a positive review in the March issue of Mixmag.[10][11] A remixes EP, featuring contributions from Low Steppa and As I Am, was released the following month.
In June 2016, Midnight City released their follow-up single, "Free," on the Parlophone[12] imprint FFRR Records. The track peaked at number 4 on the Music Week Upfront Club Top 40 chart.[13][14] It was featured in the opening episode of season 13 of Geordie Shore.[15]
In 2020, Midnight City launched their own label, All Night Long Records.[16] The label's debut release, Carrie's Groove, was followed by releases from artists such as Johnick, Chapter & Verse, and Reigan.[17]
In 2022, the duo co-wrote and produced the single "Flames" for Australian DJ duo NERVO, featuring Salena Mastroianni.[18][19] The track was released by the Los Angeles-based label Thrive Music.
