The kingdom (regnum in Latin) Methanobacteriati of Archaea domain was introduced in 2022 alongside with two other archaeal kingdoms Nanobdellati and Thermoproteati^[1]. All three were aimed to replace taxonomically invalid superphyla. Methanobacteriati replaced Euryarchaeota, Nanobdellati DPANN, and Thermoproteati TACK superphyla respectively.

Methanobacteriati contains following phyla: Methanobacteriota, Halobacteriota, and Thermoplasmatota. The type genus of the kingdom is Methanobacterium. While many lineages in the kingdom are methanogenic, there are number of taxa inside of Methanobacteriati that are non-methanogenic.
