Meredith Davis (born 1971) is an American author known for her contributions to children's and middle-grade literature. Her notable works include Her Own Two Feet: A Rwandan Girl's Brave Fight to Walk, co-authored with Rebeka Uwitonze, and the firt book in a series The Minor Miracle: The Amazing Adventures of Noah Minor. Davis is also recognized for her engagement with readers through school visits and her online platform, Face Out.[1]

Early life and education

Meredith Davis was born in 1971 and grew up as an avid reader.[1] She earned a bachelor's degree in creative advertising from the University of Texas at Austin.[2] Davis began her career in advertising but was inspired to pursue writing children's books during her time working at Toad Hall, an independent children's bookstore.[3] She later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.[2]

Career

Davis transitioned from advertising to children’s literature, founding the Austin Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). This initiative helped foster a community of writers and illustrators in Texas.[1] In recognition of her commitment to the organization, SCBWI created the Meredith Davis Volunteer of the Year Award[4] Davis has traveled extensively, visiting 35 countries over nine and a half months, experiences that have influenced her writing and worldview.[1] She frequently visits schools to inspire young readers and share her passion for literature.[3]

  • Her Own Two Feet: A Rwandan Girl's Brave Fight to Walk (2019, Scholastic Focus): This narrative nonfiction book, co-authored with Rebeka Uwitonze, tells the true story of a Rwandan girl who traveled to the United States for corrective surgery on her club feet. The book has sold over 150,000 copies and received several accolades:[5]

Face Out

In addition to her books, Davis curates Face Out, a subscription newsletter where she shares her favorite children’s books organized by themes such as self-control, gentleness, and faithfulness. Drawing from over 20 years of experience reading aloud to children, she provides short synopses and recommendations, encouraging readers to explore these stories.[1]

Meredith Davis lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, three children, and grandchildren. Her home reflects her lifelong passion for books and storytelling.[1]
