This is an example of a dialkanolamine derivative functioning as a nontoxic antidepressant. It was discovered by Bruce E. Maryanoff of McNeil in the 1980’s.[1][2]

For the purposes of classification, McN-4187 is a benzhydryl containing compound.

Synthesis

[edit]

A reduction of diphenylacetonitrile [86-29-3] will provide 2,2-Diphenylethylamine [3963-62-0]. This is alkylated with 2 equivalents of ethylene oxide [75-21-8].

It is of mention that the starting diphenylacetonitrile has a common use in the synthesis of methadone and related narcotic analgesic opioids.
