Draft:Mathew Lawrence (political activist)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathew Lawrence is a British political activist, think tank director and author. He is the founder and director of Common Wealth[1], a British socialist think tank which "designs ownership models for a democratic and sustainable economy".[2]

He is co-author of two books, Owning the Future[3] and Planet on Fire. The latter was described by New Statesman senior online editor George Eaton as offering "an urgent alternative" to the "broken model" driving a rapid rise in carbon emissions.[4]

Having previously worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the IPPR, and authored research for the New Economics Foundation, Lawrence founded Common Wealth in 2019.[5]

In June 2024, the New Statesman named Lawrence 43rd in The Left Power List 2024, the magazine's "guide to the 50 most influential people in progressive politics", describing his work as "central" to the development of "public ownership...as a distinctive strain within Labour’s policy programme."[6]
