History

[edit]

MarketVector Indexes GmbH, originally launched as Market Vectors Index Solutions GmbH (MVIS), was established on November 30, 2011[4], by Van Eck Global, a New York-based asset manager. The Frankfurt, Germany-based MVIS aimed to develop, market, and license indexes, initially supporting Van Eck Global’s exchange-traded funds (ETFs). At its inception, MVIS managed approximately USD $4 billion in investor assets, with its indexes underpinning 15 ETFs and spanning various asset classes, including commodities, international equity, and fixed income markets.[4]

On February 17, 2014, MVIS re-launched its websiteto offer a broader range of index and economic data available to the public.[5]

In 2016, MVIS rebranded its indexes from Market Vectors Indices to MVIS Indices and renamed the company to MV Index Solutions GmbH, reflecting a rebranding initiative by its parent company, VanEck.[6] By this time, MVIS had expanded to 151 indexes, covering hard assets, international equity with a focus on emerging markets, and fixed income, with 60% licensed to ETFs, amounting to approximately USD $10 billion in assets.[6]

MVIS partnered with CryptoCompare to launch a series of digital asset indices, providing comprehensive pricing data from over 50 digital asset exchanges globally on November 6, 2017. These indexes were the first of their kind, designed to meet investment industry standards and provide comprehensive pricing data from over 50 digital asset exchanges globally.[7]

On July 5, 2019, MVIS achieved registration as a benchmark administrator under the European Benchmarks Regulation (BMR). [1]

On August 3, 2020, MVIS acquired BlueStar Indexes®, an index provider focusing on the Israeli market, expanding its operations and staff across Frankfurt, New York, Tel Aviv, and San Francisco.[8] This acquisition increased its combined index assets to over USD $18 billion and integrated benchmarks such as the MVIS® Global Junior Gold Miners Index and the BlueStar® Israel Global Index.[9]

In 2022, the company rebranded again, this time to MarketVector Indexes GmbH (MarketVector), effective April 13, 2022. This change aimed to separate themselves from VanEck.[10] [11]

In June 2024, MarketVector was MarketVector was recognized as the Index Provider of the Year by With Intelligence. [12] Later that month, MarketVector announced reaching an all-time high of USD $50 billion in total assets under management linked to its licensed indexes.[3]
