Maria Umar is a Pakistani social activist advocating for women’s rights who founded the Women’s Digital League (WDL) that provides Pakistani women digital work opportunities.^[1]^[2]

Background and career[edit]

Maria Umar was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Karachi.

In 2009, Umar founded Women’s Digital League (WDL), an organization that helps Pakistani women under cultural and religion restriction from working in public or open places find remote digital work opportunities with clients around the world. The organization reportedly has thousands of women freelancers in 15 countries connecting with global remote employers and partners Upwork and Facebook. The WDL worn the GISt Tech-I Award in 2014 and the She Loves Tech Pakistan Award in 2018.^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]
