Maitri-2 or Maitri-II is a planned antarctic research station part of Indian Antarctic Programme and it is intended to replace the currently active Maitri station.It is expected to be commissioned by 2029.^[1]

Planning

The Government of India intends to replace its quit old Maitri station by this new station.The Indian Earth Sciences minister Kiren Rijiju revealded the plans of a new research station in December 2023.The site for new research station is selected a few kilometres away from the current Maitri station in East Antarctic region.It is planned to start operations by 2029. The plan of the research station was conveyed at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.^[2]^[3] The research station aims to study about the recent global climate change by study of Antarctic Ice glaciers. It is also intended to strenghthen the global collaboration in preserving the Antarctica's unique ecosystem.^[4]
