The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) playoffs is the annual elimination tournament to determine the league champion. The four-round tournament is held after the league's regular season. Eight teams from each of the league's two divisions qualify based on regular season wins. The final round of the tournament, the MPBL finals, a best-of-five series between the champions of each division.

Format

[edit]

At the end of the regular season, the top each teams from each of the league's two divisions advance to the playoffs and compete in a four-round tournament bracket. The first three rounds, the divisional rounds, are best-of-three series while the final round, dubbed as the national finals, is a best-of-five series.

During the first two rounds, the league schedules a doubleheader of games each day featuring two matchups from the same division. Because of this scheduling system, not every team will have the opportunity to play at home in the first two rounds. In the division quarterfinals, only the top four teams in each division play at home. In the division semifinals, only the top two remaining teams play at home. If a team cannot play at home, the game may be moved elsewhere, even at the homecourt of the lower-seeded team.

In the division finals, a traditional 1–1–1 system is used. The team with homecourt advantage hosts the first game and, if necessary, the third game. The national finals utilizes a 2–2–1 system with the team that has homecourt advantage hosting the first, second, and, if necessary, the fifth game.

Timeline

[edit]
  • 2018: During the league's inaugural season, it only had ten teams and there were no divisions. Thus, only the top eight teams advanced in a three-round tournament bracket. The quarterfinals and semifinals were best-of-three while the finals was best-of-five. In the quarterfinals, only the top four teams play home games if possible.

In the division semifinals, only the top two remaining teams from each division play home games if possible.
