Hypanus berthalutzae is a species.[1]

Lutz's Stingray (Hypanus berthalutzae) is a recently-discovered species of stingray of the family Dasyatidae. Discovered in 2020, the typical range of size is unknown, the largest known specimen was 68cm wide.[2] Most known specimens are female.[2]

Distribution and Habitat

Found to occur exclusively in shallow waters off of Brazilian Coasts.[3]

Description

Kite-shaped disc, slightly wider than long.[4] Eyes relatively large and protruding, with small spiracles directly behind.[4]

This stingray has a unique rate of 16:1 females to males.[3]

It is frequently caught as bycatch in different fisheries.[3] Recent studies have been performed in order to determine the prevalence of this species. Typically spotted in late September to early October.[5]
