Lunik Heist is an upcoming film written and directed by Kemp Powers in his live-action feature directorial debut, based on the 2021 MIT Technology Review article "Lunik: Inside the CIA's audacious plot to steal a Soviet satellite" by Jeff Maysh. It stars Jared Leto, John Mulaney, and Lupita Nyong'o.
Premise
[edit]In 1959, a Soviet exposition toured several countries to exhibit their scientific achievements, which included Luna 2, a spacecraft. To gain intelligence on the Soviet Luna programme, the CIA conducted a covert operation to access the spacecraft.

[edit]The film was announced on November 1, 2024, with Kemp Powers serving as both writer and director.[1][2] Powers had written the screenplay based on Jeff Maysh's article "Lunik: Inside the CIA's audacious plot to steal a Soviet satellite", which was published in the MIT Technology Review in 2021; Maysh serves as an executive producer.[3]
