Luke Jayden Heggie (born 9th of November 1971) is an Australian comedian who is known for his universal contempt of humanity, and a pathological loathing of bogans and the work shy.

Heggie began performing in 2010 after appearing on Australia’s Got Talent, delivering a deadpan and spiteful set in front of what he would go on to describe as “vapid and impotent former celebrities” which would set the tone for his career. He would later form a comedy duo with well respected journalist and known Alan Jones enthusiast, UFC commentator for Kayo Sports, Nicholas Jeffery Cody. They host a number of podcasts together, including Mid Flight Brawl and Land Larrikins.[1]

Early life

[edit]

Heggie, the youngest of three brothers, is a staunch advocate of what he refers to as “constructive bullying” as a result of his childhood experiences. He believes that if bullying is conducted in a thorough, well researched and concise manner, that it can positively shape the outcomes of a person later in life, and that if bullying is carried through with conviction to the end stage, it can prevent a person from developing unsavoury character traits later in life. He cites himself as an example of the potential positive outcomes of merciless and dedicated bullying. He often ironically laments the lack of attention to him by the Christian Brothers, specifically as a man who had delayed onset puberty.[2]

Heggie was raised a Catholic and educated by Christian Brothers in Queensland, he regularly attended his local Catholic church, was an altar boy, member of the choir, and lead saxophonist in the youth group band who regularly entertained the clergy, their associates and other known Catholics. Heggie credits these experiences as having provided him with many of the tools he would go on to use in his comedic and acting career. He is a vocal advocate for the benefits of a Christian Brother’s education.

Heggie self identifies as a Bevan and prefers the personal pronouns of Bevan or Bevans.[3]

Heggie changed his middle name to Jayden after witnessing a man called Jayden heroically defending a woman who had been spat on by her partner on a domestic flight. He believes himself to be the oldest living person with the name Jayden.

Career

[edit]

According to his website, Heggie is a hard working comedian who “gigs relentlessly six or seven nights a week”.[4]

He primarily performs his art in Australia and New Zealand, however has deigned to grace London Soho Theatre with his presence.[5]

Heggie has won a number of awards during his career, including RAW Comedy, a comics choice piece of wood at the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and the 2015 Sydney Comedy Festival’s Director’s Choice Award. He also won Best Show at 2021 Sydney Comedy Festival with the allegedly critically acclaimed show LOWBREED, a soliloquy of contempt toward his fellow human beings.[3]

Heggie has released numerous comedy specials over the years, and has made a number of them available for free on YouTube.

His specials include:

2018 - Tip rat

2019 - Have that

2022 - I already told you

2024 - Grogan

Television

[edit]

Heggie is a prolific presence on Australian television, having regularly accepted gratuities to appear on, in contrast to his public persona, populist television programmes such as The Project and The Weekly. He has also appeared on numerous comedy specials across both commercial and official government sponsored television stations.

Podcasting

[edit]

In 2020, Heggie accepted a role as a researcher on Mid Flight Brawl, the podcast of commercial radio giveaway specialist, Nicholas Cody. The podcast examines poor behaviour by what Cody and Heggie refer to as “tip rats” on aeroplanes, and great care is taken to ensure that grubs are identified and exposed. He was selected for the role due to his significant experience with the subject matter. Cody has spoken extensively about Heggie’s bizarre behaviour on aeroplanes on his podcast.[6]

After approximately 100 episodes, they started what they referred to as a “spin off” podcast called Land Larrikins which examines land based grubs, often focussing on well known human beings. Some of the subjects explored have been Travers Benyon also known as The Candyman who is a personal hero of Cody, Peter Brock, Alan Jones, John Wayne, Bernie Ecclestone, Geoffrey Edelsten, Vegans, Peter Foster, Alby Mangels, John Hopoate, and Andre The Giant.

Style and material

[edit]

Heggie has a dystopian view of the world, and regards all of his fellow human beings as beneath him, and indeed beneath contempt. This is clearly demonstrated in his relationship with his employer Nicholas Cody during their many exchanges on Cody’s podcasts.

During his standup, in the style of his personal hero the “floppy haired” Stewart Lee, Heggie treats his audience with contempt.

Heggie has never been photographed smiling and has threatened people with physical violence at the end of a carpenter’s pencil when requested to smile.

Personal life

[edit]

Little is known about the personal life of the intensely private Heggie, save for his penchant for using a portable BBQ and dehydrator on the shared driveway of his apartment complex to cook chickens, sausages, and produce pungent beef jerky, something he discusses at length on Cody’s podcast.

He has two children and is married.[7][8]

He is also known to enjoy train and bus journeys, and is an avid supporter of the Melbourne Storm. His sporting hero is Benny Elias.

Heggie also enjoys cycling to and from the airport in order to offset the carbon emissions of the flights, raising concerns about his wellbeing which are regularly aired by his co-host Cody[9]

Political views

[edit]

Heggie has expressed admiration for Russ Hinze, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Salim Mehajer and Enver Hoxha on his podcasts.
