Lucy Gaffney is an Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist known for her Alternative, indie-pop, lo-fi, and shoegaze-inspired music. Emerging onto the music scene in 2013 with her first band 'Southern' alongside her brother Thomas, Gaffney has quickly gained recognition for her hypnotic and sensuous vocals, as well as her laid-back brooding lo-fi rock sound.
Biography
[edit]Raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Lucy Gaffney showed an early aptitude for music, starting piano lessons at the age of 7. Alongside her brother Thom, she formed the band 'Southern' in 2012 and began busking in Belfast. The siblings later relocated to London, where they performed with notable acts like Jake Bugg and Pete Doherty. Southern gained international recognition, performing at concerts around the world, including a notable collaboration with Burberry in South Korea and Yves Saint Laurent. However, when Thom was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, they returned to Belfast and formed the band MMODE. Gaffney's musical journey has since taken her from Belfast to Liverpool and London, where she has honed her songwriting skills and developed her unique sound.
In addition to her work with MMODE, Gaffney has launched a solo career and a new slowcore music project called Ghoulgirl. Her experiences in various cities and collaborations with other artists have significantly influenced her musical style.
Career
[edit]Gaffney's solo career began in 2020 with the release of her debut singles 'Can’t Escape' and 'Send Me Away', produced by The Coral frontman James Skelly. Her music has been supported by major radio stations such as BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio 1, and RTE Radio 1. She has opened for renowned artists such as the DMAs, Bill Ryder-Jones, and Ryan McMullan or even the famous band Two doors cinema club. Her EPs and singles, including 'Daydream In Tokyo,' have received critical acclaim. Gaffney's music is characterized by its dreamy, hypnotic alt-rock sound and her celestial vocals.
Lucy and her brother Thom have also independently produced and directed music videos for their projects, showcasing their creative vision and hands-on approach to their artistry.
Gaffney has been associated with several labels throughout her career. Her early work with Southern was independent, but the band later gained attention and support from local music scenes. Her solo work and the project MMODE have been released under various indie labels, contributing to her growing recognition in the music industry.
In addition to her solo work, Gaffney has been part of the band MMODE with her brother, contributing to their unique sound and performances. Her latest project, Ghoulgirl, explores the slowcore genre, adding another dimension to her musical repertoire.
