Livia Manera Sambuy (born 1958, Rome) is an Italian author, journalist, critic, and documentary filmmaker.[1]

She is currently on the Board of Advisors of the American Library in Paris.[2]

Journalism

A cultural reporter and critic, since 2000 Manera has been a staff writer for the Italian national newspaper Corriere della Sera and its literary supplement La Lettura.[3] Her field is English language contemporary fiction and nonfiction.[4]

Her writings also appeared in The Believer,[5] The Paris Review,[6] and The New Yorker.[7]

She co-authored with William Karel the documentary film Philip Roth sans complexe (ARTE, 2011). She is also wrote and co-directed with Karel Philip Roth: Unmasked for PBS's "American Masters" series (2013).

Books

Her first work of literary nonfiction, Non scrivere di me (Don't write about me, Feltrinelli, Milan, 2015) blends memoir with a collection of "intimate portraits" of eight north American writers (Mavis Gallant, Judith Thurman, David Foster Wallace, Joseph Mitchell, Richard Ford, Paula Fox, James Purdy, Philip Roth).[8] Non scrivere di me won of the 2016 University of Camerino Special Award.[4]

Her following literary nonfiction book, In Search of Amrit Kaur (Feltrinelli, 2022; FSG and Chatto & Windus, 2023) explores the story of Amrit Kaur of Mandi. Kaur was an Indian Sikh princess arrested in Paris in 1940, who was said to have sold her jewels to help Jewish friends leave Nazi occupied France.[9] A work of investigative journalism, historical research as well as a personal journey, the book won the 2023 Capalbio International Award for Narrative Nonfiction.[10]
