Honorees from 1758-2019 sourced in its entirety from Columbia University Libraries.[1] Honorees 2022-present sourced from Columbia University Office of the Secretary.[2] Additional or edited information is cited inline where applicable.

The University Medal for Excellence is awarded once per year at Commencement to an alumnus or alumna (or others, especially in the early years of the award) who have performed useful or exceptional service in public or professional life. Graduates from all divisions of the University, including Barnard College and Teachers College, are eligible for the Medal. The Medal was first awarded on the occasion of the 175th Anniversary Celebration of the granting of the First Charter, October 31, 1929, to "alumni of foreign birth and training who have returned to important public service in their native lands."[3]
