Library Fair & Forum (図書館総合展)[1] is Japanese library-themed exhibition, organized by the Library Fair & Forum Steering Committee.

It started in 1999 at the Tokyo International Forum and was held in Tokyo until 2003, and since 2004 at Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.[2]

Overview

[edit]

Library Fair & Forum is the biggest library-themed event in Japan[3], annualy held 3 days in Novenber at Pacifico Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Many libraries and library-related organisations participate and organise forums, booths and posters.[2]

Around 500 organisations exhibited at the 19th Library Fair & Forum in 2017, with a total of 30,000 visitors; 141 companies and organisations had booths, around 90 lectures and forums were held, and around 80 posters by university students and various libraries and NPOs were on display[3].

In addition to the main event at Pacifico Yokohama, regional forums have been held at venues across the country since the 13th event in 2011.[2]

Background of the event

[edit]

The Library Fair & Forum was first held from 13 to 15 October 1999 at the Tokyo International Forum in Tokyo, under the planning and management of Culture Japan Inc.[2]

Culture Japan Inc. is an affiliate of Yushodo Shoten (now MARUZEN-YUSHODO Co. Ltd), and Mitsuo Nitta, then president of Yushodo Shoten, had the opportunity to attend the annual conferences of the American Library Association (ALA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). He saw a wide variety of library-related companies and organisations exhibiting there, and envisioned a similar event in Japan.[2]

Operation

[edit]

Culture Japan Inc. acts as the organising secretariat, and the steering committee is made up of several members from publishing companies, exhibiting companies, exhibiting organisations and university faculty members. In addition to this, there are around 50 steering and cooperation committee members, mainly library staff.[2]
