Lawley Bank[1] is a historic mining village in the borough of Telford and Wrekin in Shropshire, England.[2] It is located northwest of the town of Dawley and west of the town of Telford.[3] It is part of the civil parish of Lawley and Overdale.[4]
History
[edit]Lawley Bank[5] was built on the Shropshire Coalfield alongside the neighbouring village of Dawley Bank[6] during the Industrial Revolution.[7] There were multiple types of industry including concrete plants, brickworks and factories opening in and around the village.[8] The village later became part of the Dawley New Town in 1963, which later became Telford.
Amenities
[edit]Most of the villages amenities are located on Birchfield Way. There is a memorial to 2nd Lieutenant Clifford Wallace Jensen[9], who was killed during World War II and was based at the former RAF Atcham, near Shrewsbury.[10][11] The memorial straddles the boundary between Lawley Bank and Dawley Bank.
Transport
[edit]There are regular buses through the village between Telford, Shrewsbury and Madeley.[12]
The village was also formerly served by the Wellington to Craven Arms Railway with a railway station on Station Road.[13] This is now occupied by housing estates.[14]
