Laurel Schwulst (born March 15, 1988) is an American graphic designer, artist, writer, educator, and programmer.[1][2][3][4] Schwulst is critically recognized for her interactive design work, her writing, her websites, her internet art, and her innovative teaching methods.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]
Early life and education
[edit]Schwulst was born in Normal, Illinois. Her first experience with writing HTML and maintaining a website activated by Pastel Club, an online Yahoo! Group that discussed model horses.[12]
Schwulst graduated from RISD in 2010.[13]
Design career
[edit]Following school, Schwulst worked at the design studio Linked by Air in New York City.[14][15][16] At Linked by Air, Schwulst designed websites for the Yale AIDS Memorial Project, Printed Matter, artist Julia Kim Smith, and the architectural studio, Future Expansion.[17][18][19]
In 2016, Yancey Strickler and Brandon Stosuy hired Schwulst to design The Creative Independent, an arts publication run by Kickstarter.[20][21] In addition to designing the identity and website, Schwulst conducted published interviews with Min Guhong[22], Sara Magenheimer[23], Charles Broskoski (Are.na)[24], Tamara Shopsin[25], Erin Jane Nelson[26], Taeyoon Choi[27], Qiong Li[28], and Tania Pérez Córdova.[29] Schwulst worked as Creative Director at The Creative Independent until 2017.[30]
Schwulst collaborated with artist Sydney Shen on a perfume review website called Perfume Area. In 2015, Schwulst and Shen adapted the website into a book published by Ambient Works, New York.[31][32][33][34]
Since 2017 Schwulst has been working independently. She has designed websites for 'T' Space Rhinebeck, a multidisciplinary arts organization started by architect Steven Holl in Rhinebeck, New York, and Artists Space.[35] She also released an app called Flight Simulator "Ode to Airplane Mode" in collaboration with Soft, on February 5, 2019.[36]
Teaching
[edit]Schwulst began teaching design at Yale School of Art in 2013.[30] Schwulst's approach to web design is rooted in her belief that a website should change and grow over time.[6] Schwulst has an inventive approach to pedagogy with her courses often credited as inspiration and exercises, like her coding from life workshop, frequently reproduced.[37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]
Recognition
[edit]In 2018, Schwulst was awarded an Inspiring Yale award for her work as a designer and teacher.[48]
