History of formation and development
[edit]In the 17th century, an artisan from Quynh Phu district, Thai Binh brought the craft of weaving sedge mats to settle in Lat Duong village. From then on, people in the village took up the profession of mat weaving and it has been passed down to this day.
Before the 1990s, Tien Lang and Vinh Bao districts were large sedge areas of the entire Northern coastal region, so the raw material source was quite abundant, and the price of products in craft villages was often cheaper than other places. From the end of the Vietnam War until the 1990s, in addition to the domestic market, Lit Duong's products were exported to many Eastern European countries. After 1991, when there was no longer an Eastern European market, the scale of craft villages gradually narrowed, and the area of sedge growing areas was converted to aquaculture.[3]
By 1999, with the establishment of the Lat Duong sedge mat craft village cooperative and recognition as a traditional craft village, the sedge mat weaving industry here developed rapidly again. Currently, in the village there are 352 households participating in production with 450 weaving bags, 4 printing bones, nearly 1,000 regular workers, an output of about 200 thousand mats/year, and a revenue of more than 10 billion VND/year. In the village, there are many families that have been involved in mat weaving for seven or eight generations. However, locally grown sedge raw materials only meet about 30% of the total production needs of the craft village, the remaining craft villages have to import from other provinces.
