Khalil Sultan was a member of the Timurid dynasty and a great great grandson of Timur through his favourite son Jahangir Mirza and Crown prince Muhammad Sultan Mirza. He played a part in the succession war following the death of Shahrukh Mirza and was the last member of the descendants of Jahangir Mirza to be politically active.
In 1450, he was appointed governor of Shushtar by Sultan Muhammad but revolted against his patron while the latter was at war with Abul-Qasim Babur Mirza to take Shiraz. This initial revolt was quelled by Sultan Muhammad. After Abul Qasim killed Sultan Muhammad in a battle in Mazandaran, Khalil Sultan was awarded Yazd by Abul Qasim in 1452 but revolted and took control of Shiraz and most of Fars. This again was short lasting due to the invasion of Jahan Shah of the Qara Qoyunlu which resulting in Khalil fleeing east to Kerman.
In 1458, Abul Qasim died and Khalil Sultan began a renewed struggle during the scramble for power over Abdul Qasim’s realm, taking control of Sistan and Farah. In 1459 Khalil went to war with Abu Sa'id Mirza, grandfather of the founder of the Mughal Empire Babur, and attempted to take Kabul. He failed and was forced to accept Abu Sa’id as emperor but tried to lay siege to Herat in 1460, which resulted in him being deposed and most likely killed.
