The year was 1995 during a visit to Ireland I was asked if my town of Yelm Washington USA might be interested in becoming a Sister- City with Ferns Wexford Erie. I said that on returning home I would ask the town council and Mayor Kathy Wolf if there might be any interest. They said Yes. As a jester a Washington state federal senator gave us a USA flag that had flown over the capital in D.C., some photo and other items that were Yelm related. The next year Daniel Kavanaugh return to Ferns Erie with the items. The Irish people of Ferns declared that the American flag would be flown over the 12th Century Ferns castle on the 4th of July every year. Daniel return home with a Irish flag that had flown over the Irish seat of power and items related to Ferns. Every year since 1997 the Irish national flag is flown over Yelm city hall on St Patrick's week. Many Ferns resident's have travel to Yelm and visa versa.
