Dr. Alewo Joshua Atah

Dr. Alewo Joshua Atah is a Nigerian engineer, educator,[1] and administrator who leads the National Coordination of the World Bank Supported Second Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence for Development Impact (Second ACE-Impact) and the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE)[2] Project.[3] A Fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) he was previously the pioneer of Project Manager/CEO at Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) and the National Coordinator of the first Africa Centres of Excellence project Phase 1 (ACE-1)[4] from 2012 to 2020.

Early Life & Education

Atah[5] hails from Onicha-Igo, located in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. He completed his secondary education at Ochaja Boys' Secondary School in Kogi State. He earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1997 and his Master of Engineering degree in 2004, both in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria. In 2011, he achieved his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent[6] in Canterbury, United Kingdom.

Career

Early career

From 1998 to 2001, Atah[7] worked in the private sector before joining the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) between 2001 and 2002. He later joined the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2002, where he served as Head of ICT and related Projects until 2019.

National Universities Commission

During his tenure at the NUC, Atah held several key positions:

  • Project Manager of the World Bank-supported Science & Technology Education Post Basic (STEP-B) Project (2007–2012)[8]
  • National Coordinator of the first Africa Centres of Excellence Project Phase 1 (2012–2020)
  • Pioneer Project Manager/CEO of the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN)[9]
  • Coordinator for the development of a draft Nigerian University System ICT[10] Policy (2010–2011)[11]
  • Coordinator for the implementation of the ICT Resource Centres Project in seven universities (2007–2012)
  • Pioneer Administrative Assistant and later Project Manager of the Virtual Institute for Higher Education Pedagogy (VIHEP) - a UNESCO & NUC funded project for Sub-Saharan Africa (2003–2007)
