Choi Jong-ho (Korean최종호; born October 12, 2000), known professionally as Jongho, is a South Korean singer, dancer, and actor.[1] He rose to prominence as the main vocalist of the boy group Ateez in 2018. Other than performing with the group, Jongho is also a solo singer for various Korean drama soundtracks, including "Gravity" for the drama Reborn Rich (2022) and "A Day" for the drama Lovely Runner (2024).[2][3]

Outside of his music endeavors with Ateez, Jongho had his acting debut in the 2021 KBS drama Imitation and contributed to the original soundtrack "Malo" as a member of Shax, a fictional idol group in the series.[4]

Early life

Choi Jongho was born on October 12, 2000, in Nowon-gu, Seoul, South Korea. His family consists of his mother, father, and younger brother, who is an archery athlete.[5] Jongho graduated from Noil Middle School [ko] and Surak High School [ko]. He is currently enrolled in Global Cyber University [ko] in the Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment.[1]

Career

2017: Pre-debut

In 2017, Jongho was one of the KQ Entertainment trainees who passed the audition for the JTBC survival reality show Mix Nine. He was eliminated in the tenth episode with a final ranking of 43.[6]

He was introduced as a member of the pre-debut group "KQ Fellaz" along with seven others, all of whom are now part of the boy group Ateez.[7]

2018 - present: Ateez

On October 24, 2018, Jongho officially debuted as the main vocalist and youngest member of KQ Entertainment's first boy group, "Ateez" with the debut EP Treasure EP.1: All to Zero.[8] Under the group's name, Jongho has performed one solo song: "Everything", which he co-wrote as a part of Ateez fourth studio album The World EP.Fin: Will.[9]

In August 2021, Jongho alongside Ateez Yunho and San featured in Pentatonix "A Little Space" which is released in the album The Lucky Ones.[10]

In April 2024, Jongho became the main vocalist of the first male Korean group to perform at Coachella as a part of Ateez.[11]

2020 - present: Solo activities

From May 2020 to May 2022, Jongho released covers of Korean drama original soundtracks under the project name "JJongST" (Korean쫑ST). The music videos accompanying the covers feature Jongho visiting and singing at the location where the respective dramas are shot.[12] The songs covered in this project are:

Other than JJongST, Jongho also released other covers including "Wild Flower" by Park Hyo-shin,[18] "Ditto" by NewJeans with Maddox,[19] "Dear Name" by IU with Ateez San,[20] and "Tell Me That You Love Me" by James Smith.[21]

In 2021, Jongho debuted as an actor in Korean drama Imitation as Hyuk, the youngest member of a fictional group Shax.[22]

In August 2022, Jongho participated in the contest to crown 184th Generation Mask King in the show King of Mask Singer with the stage name "Steamed Cypresses".[23]

Jongho sang the main theme of Young Actors' Retreat in September 2022 titled "A Fairy Tale of Youth".[24][25] In the same year, Jongho sang the main theme "Gravity" for the drama Reborn Rich.[2] He also performs "Gravity" live on stage as a part of JTBC show Music Universe K-909.[26][27]

In February 2023, Jongho sang the main theme of the Korean historical drama Our Blooming Youth titled "Wind".[28][29] In May 2023, Jongho participated in the show Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend singing "So You" by Yarn.[30] He also participates in the same show on June 2024 singing "Things to do Tomorrow" by Sung Si-kyung.[31]

In May 2024, Jongho sang the soundtrack of the drama Lovely Runner titled "A Day".[3] This song is nominated in the Best O.S.T category in 2024 Korea Grand Music Awards.[32]

In September 2024, Jongho is reported to have participated in a new KBS2 music program "I am a Singer" with filming in Munich, Germany alongside Hongjoong, Bae Suzy, Henry Lau, and Sohyang. The series is broadcast from November 2nd, 2024 to January 11, 2025.[33]

Personal life

On August 26, 2023, KQ entertainment announced that Jongho would suspend his activities to undergo surgery and rehabilitation for his meniscus rupture.[34] On October 12, 2023, it was announced that Jongho would be returning from his hiatus and joining the rest of Ateez for "M Countdown in France" on October 15, avoiding intense choreography and will perform while sitting or standing.[35]
