Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha[1] (1963 - September 23, 2024) was a Ugandan politician, social worker, and gender activist who served as the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Western Uganda.
Early life and education
[edit]Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha was born in 1963 in Buhanama Itojo, Ntungamo District, Uganda. She was one of six sisters and the only one to complete her education, defying societal expectations that favored early marriage and gender-specific roles. Kyomugasho's early experiences with patriarchal biases in her community inspired her lifelong passion for advocating for social change and gender equality.[2][3]
Personal life and death
[edit]Jolly married in 1985. her husband died in 1992, leaving her to raise their three children on her own. In a 2013 interview with the Daily Monitor, Jolly expressed her gratitude for overcoming personal hardships: "I sincerely thank God who helped me through everything up to now."
Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha died on the afternoon of September 23, 2024, after being hospitalized for several weeks in a coma at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.[4][5][6] Her death was announced by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), "It’s with great sadness that I announce the passing of Hon. Jolly Mugisha... Mama Jolly will always be remembered as a true Ugandan heroine. Rest in perfect peace, comrade Maama!"
Career
[edit]Kyomugasho was known for wearing many hats in her lifetime. She was an evangelist, politician, theology student, counsellor, and gender activist. She once worked as a consultant with Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, focusing on gender budgeting in the Karamoja Sub-Region. Her broad expertise and strong convictions made her a respected figure both in politics and civil society.[7]
Political involvement
[edit]In July 2020, Jolly joined the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda's main opposition party, and was appointed Deputy President for Western Uganda. This region is notably home to many leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), including President Yoweri Museveni. Despite the political challenges, she helped the NUP grow in influence in the region.[8]
Kyomugasho also served as Vice Chairperson of Uganda’s National Consultative Forum (NCF), representing NUP. This forum brings together all registered political parties and organizations in Uganda.
Activism
[edit]Kyomugasho's dedication to social justice began at an early age. She was particularly driven by the discriminatory practices in her society that affected girls' education. This experience fueled her advocacy for gender equality and her broader activism against societal injustices. She worked tirelessly to promote unity, mobilize civic engagement, and train elected officials to be more effective legislators. Her goal was to create pro-people policies that would improve governance in Uganda.[9][10]
