4 districts under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone

Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is a proposed special economic zone to be jointly established by Malaysia and Singapore.

The JS-SEZ covers four districts in the Malaysian state of Johor, namely Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi, Kulai and Pontian. Pre-existing facilities such as the Kempas Tech Park, Nusajaya Tech Park, Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) and Port of Tanjung Pelepas will fall within the geographical boundaries of the JS-SEZ.[1] The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System, scheduled for commencement of operations in December 2026, will provide an alternative to current land links Johor–Singapore Causeway and Malaysia–Singapore Second Link for cross-border travel.[2]

The JS-SEZ is expected to improve connectivity between Johor and Singapore and allow companies situated in either region to scale up their operations.[3]

History

[edit]

The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone was first mentioned in October 2023 during the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat.[3]

A memorandum of understanding was signed by Singapore's Minister of Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and Malaysia's Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli on 11 January 2024 in Johor Bahru.[4] The prime ministers of Malaysia and Singapore were scheduled to sign an agreement finalizing the terms of the special economic zone in September 2024, but it was delayed to December 2024 to coincide with the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat. The signing of the agreement was further postponed to January 2025, together with the retreat, after Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was diagnosed with Covid-19 in December 2024.[5]
