John Attridge

[edit]

John Attridge[1] is an Australian businessman and entrepreneur best known as the founder and CEO of BBX UK. His career spans over four decades, during which he has worked with companies of various sizes, from small businesses to multinational corporations. Attridge is recognized as a pioneer in the field of digital trade credit and has contributed significantly to transforming the barter and exchange industries.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Attridge attended La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, where he studied economics, politics, mathematics, and English. His education laid the foundation for a versatile career that saw him take on a variety of roles across different sectors.[2]

Early Career

[edit]

John Attridge's career began modestly with Coca Cola, where he worked in manufacturing before transitioning to a role in sales. He later moved into the life insurance industry, working as a commission-based salesman for MLC Life, Australia's second-largest life insurance company at the time. His success in sales led to his promotion to superintendent and later to regional head in New South Wales.[3]

Entrepreneurial Ventures

[edit]

Attridge's entrepreneurial journey began when he co-founded Westrent Mazda Car Rentals, a car rental service based in Gold Coast, Queensland. The company thrived during Expo 88 in Brisbane, with high rental occupancies. However, a nationwide strike by commercial pilots in 1989 severely impacted the tourism industry, causing challenges for his business.[4]

During this period, Attridge was introduced to the concept of "trade exchanges," which allowed businesses to trade goods and services without cash transactions. Inspired by this idea, he co-founded The Queensland Trade Exchange with his partner David Johnstone. Over the next 13 years, they grew the exchange into a multimillion-dollar operation.

BBX UK

[edit]

In 2014, John Attridge[5] launched BBX UK, a business-to-business exchange platform that helps businesses trade their spare capacity to improve profitability. Under his leadership, BBX UK quickly grew into a thriving community with thousands of business members. The platform enables businesses to trade excess goods and services, facilitating economic sustainability through non-cash transactions.

BBX UK has become a leader in the digital trade credit space, providing its members with various services, including business training, mentorship, and industry connections. Attridge's strategic vision and ability to capitalize on market opportunities have been key factors in the company's success.

He was a prominent figure in the International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA), where he served on ethics and education committees.

In addition to his business ventures, Attridge has a long-standing association with cricket. He served as an umpire for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for over a decade and has officiated in numerous high-profile matches, including national finals and televised events.
