João Rocha Gomes is a Portuguese doctor and entrepreneur in the field of digital health and biotech.
Career
[edit]Since 2016, João has developed several initiatives and projects in the digital health space, having conquered awards at the European Institute of Innovation and Technology[1] [2], European Health Management Association [3], Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation [4], among others. Through the years, his commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship is evident in his role as a mentor for various ideation and innovation projects, particularly those centered around healthcare. [5][6][7][8]
During 2021, he worked at Hospital Pedro Hispano, in Matosinhos, as a Medical Intern in Public Health, Internal Medicine and General Surgery. In January 2022, he pivoted fully into Digital Health, joining Ada Health[9], a digital health company based in Berlin, where he worked as a Medical Knowledge Engineer. In October 2023, he moved into the position of Medical Product Lead at this company. João is also the Chief Business Officer (CBO) of Orgavalue [10], a biotech company that has received both national and international acclaim, earning several prestigious awards. [11] Since June 2022, he has been a Local Representative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Health Innovators Community. [12]
Besides these professional roles, João is engaged in scientific research, contributing valuable insights to various public health-related topics.[13][14] He is an invited lecturer of Decision, Data and Digital Health at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto[15] and often speaks on the topics of digital health and health technology. [16] [17] [18]
With his background, over the years, he has been actively engaged in policy-related organizations, including OECD[19][20],United Nations[21], ICANN[22] and the World Health Organization[23].
Education
[edit]João Rocha Gomes completed a Master's Degree in Medicine at the University of Porto (Portugal), between 2014 and 2020. During that period, in 2018, he moved to London (UK) where he received training on Cardiothoracic Surgery, at the St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Queen Mary University of London. Following that time, at the end of 2018 and through 2019, he spent one year in Warsaw (Poland) performing surgical electives at the Medical University of Warsaw.
Between 2021 and 2023, he completed a MA in Health Economics and Management at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, in Portugal. Starting from 2023, he pursues a PhD in Health Data Science, at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.
