Jean-Louis Boissier (born january 16, 1945)[1] is a french scholar, curator and artist.
Jean-Louis Boissier was born in Loriol-sur-Drôme. He first studied science, then moved to arts. In 1967-1968, he was graphic designer and scenographer for the upcomming Maison de la culture de Grenoble. There, he worked with Frank Popper, who invited him to become a founding member of the Arts department of Vincennes University where he taught until his retirement in 2013. He gratuated with a Phd in 1979. His theses subject was about arts in contemporary China[2]. His first interests both as an artist and a teacher were cinema, photography and serigraphy. During the 1980s, he started to be interested by Digital art and interactivity. He has beek advisor of 31 Phd thesis[3]. He also taught in école nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (Paris) and Geneva University of Art and Design.
He has been assistant-curator or curator of major shows such as Electra (Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris, 1983), Les Immatériaux (Centre Pompidou, 1985), and the Artifices Biennale (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996) in Saint-Denis.
As an artist, his work investigated the place of the spectator in arts, with works engaging interactive laserdisc or cd-rom, the web, and mobile phones. His work has been shown at the Interactive Media Festival Los Angeles (1994), the Biennale de Lyon (1995)[4], The ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe[5] (1995, 2002), Ars Electronica (2015)[6] and many places in France, Japan, Switzerland, etc.[1]
