Janez Dovč (born May 3, 1980, in Ljubljana) is a Slovenian accordionist, composer, producer, and educator.[1] Known for his innovative fusion of traditional Slovenian music with contemporary styles, he is a prominent figure in the Slovenian music scene. Dovč is the founder of the ensemble Sounds of Slovenia[2] and has collaborated with numerous artists and groups, including the internationally acclaimed band Terrafolk.
He is also the founder and artistic director of the independent music label Celinka.si,[3] which has released over 200 albums by Slovenian artists, and the Festival Godibodi,[4] an annual event that promotes original Slovenian music.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Janez Dovč was born in Ljubljana and developed an interest in music at a young age. He studied physics at the University of Ljubljana, where he became fascinated with the science of sound.[5] This interdisciplinary approach to music and science has influenced his creative projects, where he often bridges tradition and innovation.
Career
[edit]Accordionist and Composer Dovč is celebrated for his mastery of the accordion and his innovative compositions. His work blends Slovenian folk traditions with modern musical elements, creating a unique and recognizable sound.
His solo album AkordeON received widespread acclaim for its exploration of the accordion's expressive capabilities and its fusion with electronic music.[6] The album was praised for redefining the role of the accordion in contemporary music.[7]
Sounds of Slovenia

In 2008, Dovč founded Sounds of Slovenia, an ensemble that brings together prominent Slovenian musicians to reinterpret traditional Slovenian music.[8] The ensemble has performed at prestigious venues, earning acclaim for its contributions to preserving and reinventing Slovenian musical heritage.
Described as "the largest Slovenian supergroup" by Delo, the group combines diverse musical talents to create innovative interpretations of Slovenia's rich folk traditions.[9]
Their most recent large-scale production, O Night, Full of Grace, was performed at the prestigious Gallus Hall of Cankarjev dom. The event celebrated Slovenian folk and traditional music, blending it with modern arrangements and showcasing the ensemble's ability to connect audiences with Slovenia's cultural roots.[10]
Celinka.si and Godibodi Festival
[edit]As the founder of Celinka.si,[11] Dovč has supported over 200 Slovenian artists across a wide range of genres. Celinka.si is an independent music label that focuses on promoting Slovenian musicians and creating opportunities for collaboration in the local music scene.[12]
He also established the Godibodi Festival,[13] which serves as a platform for collaboration and creativity in Slovenian music. The festival has been praised for its commitment to showcasing fresh and innovative music while preserving cultural diversity. According to Dovč, "it is crucial to sharpen the sense of diversity, freshness, and creativity." The festival has become a significant cultural event in Slovenia, providing a space for musicians to connect with audiences in meaningful ways.[14]
Film and Theater Music
[edit]Dovč has composed music for over 20 feature films and numerous short films.[15] Among his most notable works is the score for Drevo (The Tree, 2014) by Sonja Prosenc, for which he received the prestigious Vesna Award for Best Original Score at the Festival of Slovenian Film.[16]
His compositions are celebrated for their emotional depth and innovative use of sound, often blending traditional acoustic instruments with contemporary soundscapes.[17]
Tesla: Bridging Science and Art

One of Dovč's most ambitious projects is Tesla, an interdisciplinary performance inspired by the life of Nikola Tesla. The production combines music, visuals, and storytelling, highlighting Tesla's scientific legacy and its connection to creativity and innovation. The performance has been showcased at notable venues, including Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana, where it received widespread praise for its innovative approach to blending art and science.[18]
