Rear Admiral Jim Shannon retired from the U.S. Navy in 2016 after more than 35 years of service. His last assignment was as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, International Programs (Director, Navy International Program Office). In that role, he was the principal adviser to the assistant secretary on matters involving international programs, and he oversaw maritime security cooperation and security assistance programs for the U.S. Navy with over 50 countries. Commissioned in 1981 from the U.S. Naval Academy, he served at sea on seven afloat commands, commanded at sea, led a major combat system program, commanded an Echelon III major command, and was a deputy commander at the Naval Sea Systems Command. After leaving active duty, RADM Shannon has worked in the private sector and served as a board member or advisor to non-profit organizations.
