Jakob Hallgren is a Swedish diplomat and international relations expert, currently serving as the Director of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.[1] He is also a board member of Uppsala University's Alva Myrdal Center for Nuclear Disarmarment[2] and Stockholm University's Institute for Turkish Studies[3] With a distinguished career in diplomacy, humanitarian policy, and disarmament, Hallgren has made significant contributions to international peacebuilding and Sweden's role in global diplomacy.

In 2021, Hallgren served as Sweden's Ambassador for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation,[4] where he represented Sweden in international efforts to reduce the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. From 2018 to 2021, he was Sweden's Ambassador to South Korea, promoting Swedish trade, values, and peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula. During his tenure, the Swedish Embassy in Seoul received recognition as Sweden's best promotional mission in 2020.

Between 2012 and 2018, Hallgren was the Deputy Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute,[5] where he led the institute's recovery from a deep crisis and re-established it as a global leader in peace research. His work included initiating the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, leading dialogues with North Korea and Iran, and managing peacebuilding projects in Mali.

Starting in 1997, Jakob Hallgren held various pivotal roles within the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.[6] These included managing humanitarian aid and conflict resolution, shaping European security policy, and representing Sweden in Geneva (2006–2010), where he worked on disaster risk reduction and fostered humanitarian partnerships with organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross,[7] 'UNICEF.[8]' and the UN, where he was Chairman of the Office for Disaster Risk Reduction[9] and responsible for Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.[10]

Hallgren holds a Master of Science in International Relations from the London School of Economics, a Bachelor of Political Science and Economics from the University of Gothenburg, and a Certificat d'Études Politiques from Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris. Fluent in Swedish, English, and French, he combines academic excellence with hands-on experience in international diplomacy.

In addition to his professional achievements, Hallgren has also contributed to international policy-making, co-chairing humanitarian funding and disaster risk reduction initiatives, and serving on Sweden's Folkrätts- och Nedrustningsdelegation (2016–2018). His career, rooted in unwavering values, began in his youth through active engagement in civil society, where he demonstrated leadership in various youth and scouting organizations.

Jakob Hallgren's career reflects a steadfast commitment to promoting peace, advancing humanitarian causes, fostering public understanding, and ensuring reliable and relevant research, all while strengthening Sweden's presence in global diplomacy.
