Jak P. Mallmann Showell is a historian and author of nearly forty books on the German navy[1], mostly its U-boat operations.[2]

Showell's father was a senior diesel mechanic of U-377, which sank in 1944.[3]

The U.S. Naval Institute considers him a leading authority.[4] Some of his books were not well received; "The U-Boat Century: German Submarine Warfare, 1906–2006" was most notably criticized for, "repeated attempts to rewrite German history ... well outside universally accepted facts."[3][5]
