James Joshua Gould Bias (1807-1860) was a preacher, abolitionist, and civil rights advocate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He assisted with the Underground Railroad. He was enslaved from birth in Maryland and attained freedom after working for a physician from whom he learned medical training. William Parker wrote about him in The Freedman’s Story: In Two Parts.[1] He was involved with the Vigilant Committee of Philadelphia.[2]
His wife Eliza Ann Bias also worked to free slaves and assist refugees.[3]
