Life
[edit]After studying chemistry, Gleiter studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin (1989 Dipl.-Ing.), at the IUAV - Istituto universitario d'architettura di Venezia (1985-87) and at Columbia University (1992 M.Sc. in Advanced Architectural Design) in New York.
Between 1987 and 1995 he worked in various architectural offices (J.P. Kleihues/Berlin, Eisenman Architects/New York, Thomas Leeser/New York, R. Rizzo/Rovereto, PAS - Jourdan und Müller/Berlin and Frankfurt am Main).
Gleiter was a research assistant 1995-2000 at the Bauhaus University Weimar at the Chair of Design and Architectural Theory (Gerd Zimmermann). In 2001, he completed his doctorate in architectural theory (subject: ‘Critical Theory of Ornament’) at the Bauhaus University Weimar. From 2001 to 2002, he was a research assistant at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) at the chair of Alban Janson. Gleiter's international teaching and research activities are linked to a large number of invitations as a visiting professor to Japan, the USA, Italy and Germany: 2003 at the UIV - Università Internationale di Venezia, 2003-2005 at the Waseda University in Tokyo, 2005-2007 at the Bauhaus University Weimar, 2005-2008 at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, in 2016 at the Brown University in Providence (RI) and in 2023 at the Politecnico di Torino. Since 2021 he has held a permanent visiting professorship for Theory of Contemporary Architectural Design at the Politecnico di Milano.
Research interests
[edit]Gleiter's research interests cover a wide range of topics spanning the fields of architectural theory and history, critical theory, cultural studies, epistemology, semiotics, phenomenology and aesthetics. This has resulted in two comprehensive works introducing architectural theory: Architekturtheorie zur Einführung (2022) in the series zur Einführung published by Junius Verlag and Architekturtheorie 1863-1938 (2018), volume one of a three-volume work on architectural theory. The other volumes (in preparation) are volume 2 Kritische Theorie der Architektur (1940-1990) and volume three Kritische Erkenntnistheorie der Architektur (1992-today).
Jörg Gleiter has been in charge of the ARS - Architectural Research Stage research project since 2021. The topic is the multimedia linking of the various research products in architecture such as essays, books, plans, models, 3D animations, films, material samples, images, etc. in a publicly accessible (open source) digital repository. The project, which is funded by the DFG with €800,000, is a joint project with the UdK Berlin (Norbert Palz and Susanne Hauser) and is led by Michael Dürfeld.
Other research topics include architectural theory of modernity (15th-21st century), critical theory of sustainability, ornament theory, architectural psychology, Japanese architecture (theme parks) and Friedrich Nietzsche.
