Life and career

[edit]

Ivailo Stanev was born on December 5, 1976, in Bulgaria. He discovered his passion for photography at the age of 15 through a school club. With a focus on people, he began his career in fashion and portrait photography while also pursuing documentary projects that offer a deeper insight into daily human life.

Ivailo Stanev has numerous publications in renowned magazines such as Esquire[1][2][3][4], Playboy[5][6], Maxim[7], Harper’s Bazaar[8], Biograph[9] and others. Between 2014 and 2019, he worked as a photographer and photo editor for the Bulgarian edition of Esquire and was a long-term photographer for the Bulgarian editions of Playboy (2009–2019) and Maxim (2010–2016). His work has been featured in international editions of these magazines in Germany,[10] the Czech Republic,[11] Russia,[12] Australia,[13] and Greece.[14][15]

In 2017, Stanev was selected by Magnum Photos for the exhibition "Magnum Swap Shop", presented in London as part of Magnum's 70th anniversary.[16]

During the same year, he began collaborating with the Spanish bullfighter Jesús Duque on a project documenting the cultural heritage of bullfighting in Spain. This collaboration resulted in a series of photographic exhibitions held in Prague (2018)[17], Valencia (2019)[18][19][20], and Hamburg (2023)[21].

In 2018, Stanev was honored as one of the winners of the Olympus Masters Europe Award [17] with an exhibition in Prague showcasing segments of his documentary project Rojo-Trozos de Pasión.

That same year, he opened a gallery dedicated to artistic photography in Valencia, Spain.
