Isabel de Camargo Neves Sacco, PhD, is a Brazilian researcher in the Laboratory of Biomechanics of Human Movement and Posture at the University of São Paolo, specializing in diabetic neuropathy. Her research focuses on the biomechanics and rehabilitation of people with diabetes, osteoarthritis, as well as recreational runners. Sacco is member of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, and had been honoured in 2014 by the Brazilian government CNPq as one of 22 young female Brazilian scientists for her academic career and contribution to the training of human resources.

Education

Sacco has an academic background in physical education and sports science with a focus on biomechanics and diabetic neuropathy. She earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of São Paulo in 1995, followed by a Master's degree in 1997, a PhD in 2001 and a Habilitation in 2009 from the same institution, with studies focused on the biomechanics of the diabetic foot.[1]. Sacco has a daughter, named Paola.

Academic Career

Sacco has been an associate professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo since 1999 and a 1B Research fellow of CNPq-Brazil. She has served as a member of reviewing panels for funding agencies both at a national and international level, and she has been a member of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot since 2017 updating the International Guidelines for Prevention of the Diabetic Foot every 4 years[2]. Through her work on the diabetic foot, Sacco has produced patented computed programs to support health care decisions. She is active in different scientific societies, and has served on the board of directors of the Brazilian Society of Biomechanics on multiple occasions. She has also been the first woman acting as president of the International Foot & Ankle Biomechanics Meeting (i-FAB) in 2021[3].

Sacco is also actively engaged in teaching as a member of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel since 2016. She has also served as the coordinator of the Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo between 2015 and 2019, and between 2023 and 2025. Her contribution to teaching at the University of São Paulo earned her recognition as a Honoured Professor in multiple occasions. Thanks to her contribution to both research and teaching, Sacco was honored in 2014 by CNPq as one of 22 young female researchers (under 40 years old) for her nationally and internationally recognized academic career, significant scientific production, and important role in human resource training[4].

Biomechanics Research

As the head of the Laboratory of Biomechanics of Movement and Human Posture, Sacco’s main areas of research include education in Health; the biomechanics and rehabilitation of diabetic and osteoarthritis patients, and recreational runners; the biomechanics of the Pilates method, and the pelvic floor loading in different populations[5]. With extensive experience in biomechanics research, Sacco is a prominent figure in the field, having a long history of national and international cooperation. She has supervised more than 35 graduate students over the past 20 years. Her career includes the registration at the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of two software for public use[6][7].

As of August 2024, according to Web of Science, Sacco has 156 publication and has been cited 2,866 times[8]
