The Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT) is a premier technical institute located in Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, India. Established in 1955, it is renowned as the first polytechnic in Asia, providing quality technical education through diploma and degree programs in engineering and technology.[1]

History

[edit]

IERT was founded as a Civil Engineering School in 1955 with Late Shanker Saran, a retired judge of the Allahabad High Court, serving as President and Late Vishwamitra, an advocate, as the Secretary. It was the first polytechnic in Asia at its inception.[1]

In 1962, the Government of Uttar Pradesh took over the institution and renamed it Allahabad Polytechnic, managing it through a newly formed registered society, which included a Managing Committee of 11 members. The Director of Technical Education, U.P., became the ex-officio Secretary of the Management Committee, and the institute was given grant-in-aid status by the state.[2]

In 1982, the Government of Uttar Pradesh renamed the institution to the Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology and granted it academic autonomy, allowing for greater control over its academic programs. This change allowed IERT to conduct its own examinations and award diplomas recognized by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and AICTE.[3]

In 2001, the Engineering Degree Division was established under government-aided self-finance, offering Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) courses affiliated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (formerly Uttar Pradesh Technical University).[2]
