On February 8, 2024, The Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a 19-foot statue of former and deceased NBA superstar Kobe Bryant outside of Crypto.Com Arena.[1] The Statue, sculpted by Julie Rotblatt-Amrany,[2] depicts Bryant's finger skyward pose after his famous career-high 81-point game on January 22, 2006 against the Toronto Raptors[3] with his name and scorer's report from that game etched into the statue. The statue honoring Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant received some mixed[4] but positive appraisal from fans [5] shortly after the statue's unveiling.
Around one month after the statue's unveiling, fans outside of Crypto.Com Arena began to spot multiple spelling errors on the sculpture.[6] The noticeable errors began to spread on various news outlets, sparking controversies and outrage among the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA community.
Spelling Errors
[edit]- Misspelling of Toronto Guard José Calderón as "Jose Calderson."
- Misspelling of Los Angeles Guard Von Wafer as "Vom Wafer."
- The Word "decision" misspelled as "decicion" in the sentence, "Coach's decision."
Controversies
[edit]Some fans were disappointed by the statue, claiming, "The Kobe Statue face looks more like Andre Ingram," and how the statue had a stunning lack of detail, pointing out their opinion on how it was hard to even tell it's resemblance to Kobe.[7] Others mentioned the statue's quite small design and how it's a, "Disrespect to Kobe."[8] Fans also pointed out minor formatting errors on the busy base of the statue which displays many of Bryant's accomplishments throughout his 20 season career.
Resolution Efforts
[edit]The Los Angeles Lakers on March 11, 2024 announced their plans to correct and fix Spelling Errors and formatting errors on the statue. The sculpture is one of the three memorials planned to stand outside their downtown arena.[9]
