In the Shadow of the Cypress (Dar saaye sarv) is an Iranian animated short film directed by Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani, produced by Barfak Animation Studio. It premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 80th Venice International Film Festival in 2023.
Plot
A former captain, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, lives with his daughter in a seaside house, leading an isolated and challenging life. Despite his deep desire to be a loving father, the captain finds himself unable to create the bond he longs for with his daughter. One morning, an unexpected event changes their lives forever, raising the question of whether it represents a new source of hope or an additional burden.
Production
The film was completed over six years, overcoming challenges such as sanctions, limited budget, and illnesses. The personal experiences and sense of mission of the directors provided the motivation to finish the project.
Distribution
The short film is distributed by Voce Spettacolo by Walter Nicoletti, with its official premiere scheduled in Los Angeles in September 2024. Thanks to a strategic distribution approach, In the Shadow of the Cypress has reached the shortlist for the 97th Academy Awards, secured a nomination at the 52nd Annie Awards in the "Best Short Subject" category, and is competing for the Oscar in the "Animated Short Film" category.
