IAMF (Immersive Audio Model and Formats) is free and open-source surround sound system developed by Samsung Electronics in collaboration with Google. Announced in October 2023 and adopted by Alliance for Open Media, IAMF aims to enhance immersive audio experiences across various applications, including streaming, gaming, augmented reality, virtual reality, and traditional broadcasting.
Technology
[edit]IAMF uses Opus, AAC, FLAC, and uncompressed audio to deliver high-fidelity, versatile audio across various platforms and devices. By supporting these formats, IAMF ensures compatibility with a wide range of media applications. This flexibility allows for optimal audio quality depending on bandwidth availability and listener preferences. IAMF also offers three distinct features that enhance the audio experience.
Vertical Sound Expression
[edit]Unlike traditional Audio codecs only supported horizontal sound orientation. But IAMF allowing sound to be positioned. This enables more realistic soundscapes. When applied to home entertainment systems, like TV, speakers and soundbars, IAMF enhances the spatial realism of the audio, delivering an enriched listening experience.[1]
AI-Based Scene Analysis and 3D Audio Effects
[edit]IAMF use artificial intelligence and deep learning to dynamically adjust audio based on scene content. This technology emphasizes specific audio elements such as background music or sound effects, optimizing clarity and enhancing key moments in media content. It also adapts audio output to the listening environment, providing high-quality sound even on standard devices.[1]
Customizable Audio Experience
[edit]One of IAMF's standout features is its ability to offer users highly customizable audio settings. Users can tailor the audio mix to their personal preferences, amplifying certain sound effects or adjusting dialogue clarity for a more personalized listening experience. This level of customization allows users to enhance specific audio elements according to their tastes, ensuring a more engaging and immersive experience across various types of content.[1]
