The Hutsul Uprising was a massive armed uprising against the Polish occupation authorities by the peasants of the Kosiv district of the Stanisławów province (now part of the Ivano-Frankivsk region) on 16-19 April 1920.
The uprising covered 11 settlements and involved more than 10,000 people, mostly the peasantry of Kosiv, as well as Kolomyia, Sniatyn, Pechenizhyn, and Horodenka districts. The uprising was led by a headquarters headed by former prisoners of war of the Austro-Hungarian army who had returned from Russia. The uprising began with an armed uprising in the village of Zhabie (now Verkhovyna), which was supported by residents of the villages of Zelena, Holovy (both now villages in Verkhovyna district) and others. The insurgents attacked police and gendarmerie units, disarmed them, expelled representatives of the Polish occupation authorities, seized forestry, and advocated reunification with Ukraine. The regular army and police suppressed the uprising, arresting more than 250 people, most of whom were sentenced to long prison terms.
